Spend it!

The other day, FashionTV was on and on about de Grisogono.  It's a luxury brand for fashion jewelry, heavy on goods for the rich and aspirational.  Their parties and PR material are fun to watch.  Enjoy.

FashionTV just now played Oliver Twist, by Nigerian musician D'Banj.  All I have to say is follow your dream.  D'Banj is doing that.

If you are not (yet) in dG spending mode, it's cool:  last week I took my old watches to a shop down the street and got cool new straps and batteries.  Way to bring them back to new, improved, life.  It's like being my own watch designer :)

Obviously, Nigeria is doing design right, with big and growing international fashion shows sharing our stuff to the world.  Not that we need the world's approval.  Nigerians are just that fashionable.

Who loves FashionTV? (and why)

The Broke Habit

Glory Edozien writes at BellaNaija.com :

Personally, I have learnt the hard way to live within my means. Days of over spending on credit cards only to find that Loui and Gucci cannot pay my food and light bill. So, today, if I see something I cannot afford, I just say to myself “one day, Glory, one day” and move along. But this was not a lesson I learnt easily. Not at all. There was a time when I would spend all my weekly earning in three days and live the remaining four days feeling miserable, vowing to be smarter the following week only to repeat the same mistake in record time!

(Read more more more...)

Another friend of mine recently threw her 30th birthday dinner at a popular location on the Island. Endless bottles of champagne and food for all! She must have had over 30 people present and she kept asking everyone to order as they wished on her. I thought nothing of it at the time, after all not all fingers are equal. Two days after the party, this same friend called and asked for a rather huge loan, which she would payback in monthly installments. I assumed she must have bankrupted herself after her lavish party and willing obliged her without asking many questions. Only to later learn that she had borrowed similar amounts from mutual friends’ months before and was yet to repay.

When I approached her on the issue, she explained that she was trying to gather shopping money for her regular summer trip overseas and would repay all debts on her return. To say I was perplexed, would be an understatement. This is a girl, who has what I imagine to be a well paid job, and constantly has some designer gear straddled on her limbs. I couldn’t understand why she would need to live a life that was clearly well beyond her means.

Buying Vintage

Penny wise, pound foolish.
Went shoe-shopping at Yaba Tejuosho market this week. Bought some really quirky, nice, earthy and comfortable shoes at 1/10 the "Island" price. One's red, one cream, one brown. So I may actually give my favourite pair (black sandals, bought at the same location) a bit of a holiday - or not.
For clothes too, I like the Yaba area - inside Unilag, near Unilag front gate, and at Sabo Ecenter - 1/3 of Island price.
I found some blouses in a stall at Ojota one morning. I think they were China, not okrika. Who can tell the difference? Who cares? They are just lovely.

Glossary:
China ~ cheaply manufactured
okrika ~ second-hand

What's your Money Personality?

Source

By Brent Kessel, MSN Money

In my experience, the people who are happiest with their relationship to money are fairly balanced among most, if not all, of these archetypes. But the reality is that most people have one or two dominant archetypes that keep them stuck with unsatisfying financial habits.

One of the areas where our dominant archetypes can create the most damage is investing. For example, the Guardian prefers ultraconservative assets such as certificates of deposit and bonds, and can tend to trade too much to avoid losses. My advice for such a personality: Create a long-term investment plan that requires little meddling, and stick to it.

Or take the Star. When it comes to investing, he or she chooses assets because they're in vogue, such as tech stocks in the late 1990s, real estate and hedge funds more recently or "green" companies for the future. For such a personality, I advise investing 90% of his or her net worth in a "boring," disciplined portfolio and only 10% in a "cocktail party" account, so he or she still has investments to brag about.

Our dominant archetypes can change over time, especially with guidance.

"For many years, my focus was on building my business and savings, to the point of not really taking the time to fully enjoy or share the fruits of my success," says Abacus client John Baudhuin, a co-founder of fitness company Spinning, which developed the group-cycling program used by 35,000 gyms worldwide.

"But in recent years, I've shifted some of the emphasis from the Saver and Empire Builder to the Pleasure Seeker and Caretaker, and my life is more balanced as a result. For example, I started a family and splurged on a high-performance car I never would have considered buying even a few years ago."

Baudhuin's story shows how emphasizing the money types we've been neglecting can lead to greater financial fulfillment.

The Cheap Date Guide

Seriously, has it come to this? :)
In Dating during a recession, the author writes tips like:
Flash a coupon. Think about it: If a restaurant really wanted you to use that 25%-off coupon, would they demand that you show it to your waiter, in full view of your date, the instant you sit down? Still, coupons can be a good way to have your dating cake and eat it too, especially if you can wave them at the maitre d’ when your gal pal isn’t looking. (You can also be honest and suggest trying a particular restaurant because you happen to have the coupon. I don’t recommend this, but some people insist it works.)
Other suggestions: cook dinner together, sample some ethnic cuisine, rent a movie ... I guess I do these already ... move in together, skip the reception ... you lost me there, what's the point of a wedding without a reception ;)

Happy 2007 to you!!!

I just saw a TV show this morning titled Rob Black and your Money, on which the host answers callers' money questions.

He's really good. His context is the American system, but I believe all audiences can learn something precious.

For the FREE webcasts, visit robblack.com - click on "media" - or even better, visit his page on KRON4, the Bay area's news station.

Credit. Let's talk credit.

Someone was telling me today about new Credit Card services being introduced in Nigeria. Examples from Ecobank Nigeria Plc, and UBA, United Bank for Africa, Plc.

My worry is that, as in America, widely available credit will provide opportunities...for many people to enter great financial hardship.

It's how much you keep

The Debt Diet is a series on the Oprah Winfrey show every weekday this week.
I just caught some of Part II today. It's pretty good, and even if you don't owe, it gives some tips for tracking and controlling spending.
If you're dying to see everything together, the five-part series is on DVD for sale at oprah.com for a lot of money.

What would you do

If you suddenly received $2000 (or its equivalent) what would you do?
What if the $2000 had to be spent on a business, what would you do?
