Experienced and unemployed?

Youth unemployment has been with us for a while, but consider that even for "grown-up-adults" (who in many cases have tasted of the fruit of nicely-paid employment) the struggle is getting quite real  😎  No, really it's not funny.  😅

Ageism is a thing.  Trust California to take it to the extreme.  
“We Want People Who Have Their Best Work Ahead of Them, Not Behind Them.”  
Well, ok, that's just more business for this cosmetic surgeon: A few months ago, a 26-year-old came in seeking hair transplants to ward off his looming baldness. I told him I wouldn’t let him. His hair pattern isn’t even established...  Ok, that was funny.

Here are gripping battle-stories, mostly told by older workers and entrepreneurs.  They speak of the need to constantly upgrade skills, they speak of overwork, of workplace culture and sometimes faking the young-people behaviours to fit in, of the possibilities of exiting the race... I suppose many of them can become successful entrepreneurs? 

On the policy-level too, we should be thinking about how to apply all the abilities of all the people, and in particular, how to apply the accumulated wisdom of older workers, that is, how to 'turn grey into gold'.

Minimum Requirements

The following are the minimum requirements to be eligible for the Young Professionals Program.

• Citizenship of a member country of the World Bank
• 32 years of age or younger (i.e. born on or after October 1, 1984)
• A PhD or Master's degree and relevant work experience
• Fluency in English
• Full proficiency in one or more of the WBG's working languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish is desired but not required.
• Specialization in a field relevant to the WBG Technical/Operations such as economics, finance, education, public health, social sciences, engineering, urban planning, agriculture, natural resources, and others.
• At least 3 years of relevant professional experience related to development or continued academic study at the doctoral level.

Additional Qualifications

To be competitive for the limited number of positions, a combination of the following credentials is highly desirable:

• Display a commitment and passion for international development
• Possess outstanding academic credentials
• Exhibit excellent client engagement and team leadership skills
• Have international development country experience
• Be motivated to relocate and undertake country assignments (operational stream)

Because traffic is killing, because 5-days a week is so 20th century, because why is there a crater in the middle of the highway, because we may really need to make the meetings snappy, because weren't all these gadgets supposed to raise human productivity, because whatever happened to just chilling, because let's spread the work around so we won't have so many unemployed...

It's Thursday. We're almost there.
Then rinse, repeat.

Whose idea was the 40-hour workweek, anyway?  Hint, it's why we celebrate Worker's Day, aka my birthday :)

And how long before 40-hours-a-week goes the way of the pocket calculator? Hint: as soon as people decide they can tolerate the change.  Who would you be without a job, without the predictability of a daily commute?  Everybody's doing it, so it must be right, right?
